Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
