Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials state early analysis indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for details.
A senior political figure stated the incident made him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
